What elderly people really expect from life
You shall think I am pretentious writing about elderly expectations!
First because I am not that old yet and secondly because people rarely know what they want!
Agreeing with both probable protests I have a good argument on my favor - 30 years of experience with people and physical exercise gave me plenty of samples to share with you!
HEALTH X PLEASURE
Nobody, I mean really nobody, cares about their health till the day they lack it. And so the elderly. They will realize they need to exercise and do diet as soon as the doctor tells them - You are in trouble! Before they look after a club or personal training for exercise, they will look for pleasurable activities, so why not offering them fun classes with music, some light competitions and new sensations as part of the routine of exercises? The group will be happy and will perform spontaneously through the whole hour or work out!
WHEN DEPRESSION ATTACKS
Our biggest enemy of modern times - depression. It knocks our emotional door and fast it is inside our minds and heart. How can we professionals of health help to fight it? The answer is - by observing our clients. Check their spirits every week, prepare some questionnaires about how do they feel, promote round tables about general topics that touches feelings of loneliness, etc. As soon as we notice any changes in behavior, we should activate a professional help for our clients. We can save lives just by paying closer attention to our friends/clients.
GAMES - CHILDREN GAMES
My observations made me believe we definitely grow older and younger at the same time. Make any games with the old group of clients and you will see a bunch of children screaming and laughing loud as they were 07! Including some kids plays and games of the old times will be productive and fun for the children of 70 and 80 you have in your group!
SHARING EXPERIENCES
Everyone had a long, sometimes difficult history to tell. Let them tell it! Make a "Story Telling Afternoon" and let them write about any passage of their lives they wish to share. Add some nice music and gifts for the participants and you will have an Event!
The baby boomers and older than them were not used to do exercise and work out as part of their routines. It is a new activity in their lives and we, professionals of Fitness, should be aware of it.
Presenting the new life routine in a funny and interesting way will cause a nice impression.
The most important thing here is to promote movements for them and bring back health and good humor for these special group of clients.
