Fitness and Women

To start our monthly encounters on these pages, “myths” came to be a good beginning.

Working in clubs for more than 25 years, showed me that the number of members in clubs believing sweat makes you slimmer is more than desirable and lead them to lose trust in good services for not reaching their goals!

So the idea of the articles that will be posted here is to guide you to REAL RESULTS while in a Health Club.

So many articles have been written about Fitness and Women in the last 10 to 20 years.

Before, without the proper research and equipment to understand joints and their limits, instructors around the world were practicing the so called “empirical method”: only guided by practical experience rather than precepts or theory.

Nowadays we cannot excuse ourselves and believe in the old fashion “miracle machine” that will make your abs flat in some weeks! Please, we know too much to be attached to antique, non-scientific, empiric knowledge!

Shall we face the myths?

Wrapping the body to sweat more and lose more.

There is only one way to shape your body, exercise and shape muscle. Fat cannot be shaped or moved from one area to another in our bodies, or melted with high temperatures. Otherwise the steam rooms and saunas would be the right solution. Fat has a process to “disappear” from our body deposits areas (nice name for belly fat…) and it includes movement. Muscles are feed by the break of fat after some minutes of constant exercise. Start moving big muscles (legs, chest, back) and the fat will be called to nurture the muscle contraction. Walking, playing sports, swimming, running, skate rolling, aerobics, lifting weights: for more than 20 minutes, will guarantee you fat burning.

So, wrapping your body with any type of material will make you sweat more and lose water, but no fat burning is enhanced because of the high temperature or tight belt.

Heavy weights for women will make them look like men and have big muscles.

Most female members in clubs are afraid to work out with heavy weights because of the mistaken information that to build muscles is that easy.

If you research in the web about testosterone – male hormone, you will feel relieved!

Women don’t have the male hormone that turns normal men into Mr. Muscle. Even if we wish to have big muscle it will be very difficult and imply into special diet, supplements, genetics and time!

Metabolism is a word we should have in mind. Speed metabolism is the answer to good body shape, self motivation and energy to carry on day-to-day activities. Heavy weights will accelerate your metabolism to this point. And, well oriented by a professional, you can increase, step by step, weights on your work out. Your results will appear in the waste line and in an amazing good mood!

Trust in your body structure! You are a woman, born to have strong personality not a strong biceps!

If I exercise as much as I can in one day and while fasting I will burn all my fat quickly.

From all myths, that’s the most dangerous one.

Your body has a limit of calories free to burn in one day. More than that, the brain shuts down the doors of calories, you burn muscles if insist to cross the line.

Your body does not accumulate exercise. So to do a lot of exercise today does not redeem you from work out tomorrow.

Fasting and exercise are a fatal mixture: blood pressure goes down, dizziness, dark vision can provoke serious injuries and, again, no calories are being burned.

The body systems are designed to give away calories for muscles to move only if the levels of food are satisfactory in the blood. Fasting is a bad idea of burning calorie. The body feels in dangerous and protects the main organ – BRAIN – from get rid of nutrition (the same nutrition we use to exercise – glycogen). Many people feel bad in Spinning classes or other cardio class and pass out inside the room. The brain is shutting down your senses, as your decisions make no sense for the big thinker!

For all of us that know the importance of exercising, the safety should be the main concern ever.
